Now this is something that truly, honestly has always puzzled me: The recent healthy diet thing that everyone's been pushing has always been around. Everyone knows that eating real, whole grain bread is a hundred times better than eating white bread, and you should cut down on refined sugar, candy, trans fat, etc. However, food suppliers have never, ever stopped making foods that we know are bad for our health. And the people don't stop consuming. Then we get all guilty and wonder what we can do to change. I think I've figured it out: Money. They make and we buy the unhealthy food because it's easier and cheaper to mass produce. Or is it? I love Whole Foods Market, where I can get a box of good unprocessed mac and cheese for less than a buck, and at a supermarket the Kraft stuff, even the generic, is two bucks.
I'm confused because we know damn well we as Americans need to be eating better, and yet try as we might we can't knock the "bad sugar/fat" addiction. Is it the companies' fault for selling? Is it the public's fault for buying? Is it the media's fault for publishing. Even I, a skinny human, need to eat healthy. I can't gain good weight by gorging on Hoho's and Papa John's Pizza every day. I still eat my fruits and veggies and grains and fresh meats. But every time I go shopping for the good stuff, there are shelves and shelves of the bad stuff. How come more people aren't favoring the healthy? Or am I just really not paying attention?
