I would like a show of hands, both women and men:

How many husbands/boyfriends/fiances actually do real housework, like cooking dinner, washing dishes, doing laundry, vacuuming, mopping floors, cleaning bathrooms, etc?

Because mine sure does. Willingly. Really. In fact, he is a friggin' gourmet. He was accepted into the Culinary Institute of the Arts (but couldn't afford to go even with a huge scholarship). He cleans house better than I do, bitches.

There seems to be this myth going around that men don't know how to do these things, and leave it all up the women.

In fact, let me quote from a parenting magazine I leafed through in the doctor's waiting room on Friday: "Unicorns. Dragons. Bigfoot. A husband who, on any given Monday, cooks dinner and does the dishes, then puts the kids to bed while you read a magazine and relax.
If your first thought was 'No such husband exists,' you're correct. Neither do unicorns, dragons, or Bigfoot. They're myths, and obvious ones at that."

When I read that, I actually got angry. Extreme stereotyping sucks. Not all men watch football, either. Mine watches NASCAR.

Yes, mine also loves the History Channel. And the Discovery Channel, the Science Channel, and Animal Planet.
I also don't lump NASCAR in with football.

I love to cook and I know many men who at the least contribute some and a few who are full-time house husbands.

::Raises Hand:: My Hubby Does! He's Wonderful That Way {Because Of My Health Problems} He {Voluntarily} Does All Of The Laundry And Grocery Shopping, Quite A Bit Of The Cleaning And He Makes Meals Sometimes Too {Although He's Not A Gourmet!} And He Does It All Sweetly, Willingly And Lovingly! He's Also Not A Sports Watcher. {Luckily We Enjoy Most Of The Same Telly Programmes!} So That Article Is A Big, Fat Liar! My Husband Is Just That Wonderful! And Besides, I Know That Unicorns, Dragons And Bigfoot Exist Too! :oP

Mine vacuums, unloads & loads the dishwasher, and does some laundry. We trade off on litter box duty.

with the exception of laundry, which i do, and dishes, which neither of us do (yeeeeeah), james does all the housework and the cooking. in fact, i'm pretty helpless when it comes to looking after the place. i feel terrible too because he is away this weekend and i know if our situations were reversed the house would be spotless when i got back. *sigh*

and my husband watches football, and baseball, and hockey. so do i. we do these things *together*, the way some people go to the movies, except with more yelling and more beer.

I love hearing about couples who watch sports and other "mahnly" shows together. That, too, breaks a stereotype: That of the lazy, couch potato husband who lounges on the couch for four hours and demands that the wife bring him the beer; while the wife glares at him with her arms crossed and complains how lazy he is.

I'm starting to get into NASCAR, myself. It is also really amusing to go to Billy and Charlotte's house and watch them scream at the television together, because Billy has someone to get worked up with all the time, and it's adorable.

*Raises hand* Though not as much as I used to, but that's because I've implemented the exercise plan (and, well, I'm still easily distracted by writing--and oblivious to dishes piling up). The only thing I haven't done in a long time is cleaning the bathroom, and I tend to sweep but not mop so much. (Though I made up for that with all the mopping I did in the basement after December's flooding.)

Unicorns. Dragons. Bigfoot. A parenting magazine with imagination...

Indeed! That particular article was about a bunch of parenting myths and truths.

My husband is actually a better cook than I and he enjoys it more than I do, so when it comes to cooking we're about equal (only because he works, otherwise he'd probably do it most of the time). As for everything else, I do most of it, but not because he won't. I am a bit more anal retentive when it comes to cleanliness, what with having the military father and all. The dirty gets to me before it does him, so I end up doing it. Plus he works during the day while I am at home, so I have more time to tackle that sort of thing. But he does help out when I am sick, like yesterday, or when I simply ask for help.

As for sports: he watches hockey, and occassionally football. I don't do hockey, it bores the piss out of me, but football I like. I'm more into college football than NFL, specifically SEC football, even more specifically Alabama football. :)

I just poked [livejournal.com profile] heofmanynames to look at this entry. Heck, he is the one who does most of the housework. As far as I can tell, it's mostly because he's a Virgo. I try not to think about it too much because I'll just beat myself up if I do.

He's not a big sports fan either.

And he really hates anti-male generalizations. :)

I *do* like football, though (..but I seldom think about watching it (or playing...)).

We're both fairly lazy housekeepers, but we both pitch in when it's needed.

Evan is quite insistent on coking and cleaning and doing odd jobs. He likes to feel he is lking after me. :) I'd say he does more hosuework than me.

My dad used to do most of the cooking, and we were glad of it. (Mum's cooking sucked.)

When married, I tended to do all the shopping and take care of the kids after I got home from work. I suck at cleaning, but I'm a decent cook.

Heh heh...my husband does more work around the house than I do. Well...it's more equal now that he has to go into the office every day, but still. He cooks, he cleans, does dishes, vacuums, does laundry, etc, etc.

And he doesn't like football either. In fact, the only "sport" he really watches is motorcycle racing/supercross. ;)
