It is amazing how, in times of stress, a person's mind will turn to the simplest, most mundane things to keep afloat. As of recent months, I have had a fascination with the chemistry, psychology, social aspects, and pure science of cosmetics and skin care. So I find myself experimenting with what I have--lipsticks, foundations, body butters, hair cream. I imagine the perfect blend of botanical and synthetic ingredients. I think about my ideal colors. Anything to put my mind in a calm focus. It seems silly and candy ass and girly, but in certain times of emotional strife, we do what we must to stay sane. Boys play with motorcycles and electronic appliances. I play with child's things from a grown-up perspective.

One of the secretaries here has just announced over email that she is in a very sad predicament. A few days ago, she was driving and noticed a small puppy limping in the middle of the street. She stopped and got out of her car and waved to traffic so it would stop, then scooped up the dog. Turns out it had a broken leg and no owners. It had been hit and the driver had just sped off. Lisa took it to the local shelter for the time being and also found people who could take it in, but unfortunately, the vet bills to fix it will run high and neither she nor the potential owners can afford it. So this email she just sent is pleading with the lawyers to have a heart and donate some money, because if no one can pay for the vet bills, the shelter will put the puppy down on Monday. I certainly couldn't afford to help now, or I would. But I am hoping that at least some of these lawyers, who make at least a hundred grand a year, can break their piggy banks just a little for a wounded dog. Yes, I know, it's just a dog and what is a dog's life worth, but this is a puppy and I'm hoping that everything turns out okay and she lives a long and healthy happy puppy life. It's not fair to let something (or someone) die just because you can't afford medical care. Kinda like people and the hospital system sometimes.
