great speech
Mar. 21st, 2003 09:36 pmThis was taken from one of my mailing lists. I really like this guy now. Nothing to do with anything but opinions on sexual diversity, since the list debate got rather off-topic when gay Renaissance artists were mentioned. (Don't ask.)
My official opinion on homosexuals: Rock on. Do whatever makes you happy.
If there is a God, I think He has better things to do than worry about who
sticks what where. At least, He SHOULD.
People who say there's evidence in the Bible that homosexuality is wrong are
a big reason why I don't read the thing. The same thing with my relatives,
who say that there's evidence that black people are inferior to white
people. I don't buy it, and the fact that a significant number of people
get those kind of messages from the Bible were a big part of what turned me
off to religion in the first place. Too much is left open for
interpretation for my tastes. When that interpretation leads to people
labeling others, well I say "screw that".
I never, ever understood why so many people seemed to have a problem with
homosexuals. What's the big deal? Who's getting hurt? Why is it "wrong"?
Because it's not the standard, that's why. People are historically against
things they don't understand. So to make them feel better about their own
insecurities, they embrace religion as a backup for their arguments. "See?
It's in the Bible; GOD says it's wrong"... no he didn't. Not to me. I
never heard from the guy, not a fax, not a memo, not one phone call or
Email, and if He was gonna bother taking time out of His busy schedule to
call me up on the hotline, I DON'T think He'd bother saying "Sean, this is
God. Don't f*** other guys in the ass, okay? I just really don't approve."
If anything, He'd probably tell me to cut my damn hair already. Not that
I'd listen.
I, personally, think that it's religious repression of homosexual behavior
that is responsible for all these stories you're hearing now about priests
molesting kids. Evidence is starting to surface that says this stuff was
happening in the FIFTIES. It's nothing new. My own theory is this: these
guys are gay, they were always gay, since like birth they were probably gay.
I don't see how you can choose to be gay any more than you can choose to
be straight. Anyway, these kids are raised in a strict religious
upbringing, where it's constantly hammered into their heads how "WRONG" it
is to be gay. So they're gay, and they don't know what to think, because
they're afraid they're going to Hell because it's so "wrong" and "immoral"
etc etc. So they repress. They repress SO much that they sink deeper into
their religious beliefs and eventually become priests, all as a way of
trying to deal with their repressed shame. Finally, the stress just makes
them snap, and they start feeling up altar boys. If they were allowed to be
gay in the first place, maybe they wouldn't be so damn confused.
Deviant behavior often comes about because of repression. Repression is a
BAD thing. People repress because they are ASHAMED. They're ashamed
because they are told that what to them is natural behavior is WRONG. Check
out the psychological profiles of deviant sex offendors and I think you'd be
surprised how many people were repressed youths. I studied some Criminal
Justice, Psychology and Sociology in high school; I'm not an expert in any
of them, not by far, but I know enough to have a healthy grasp of what I'm
talking about in this particular subject.
Bottom line: I think homosexuals are just fine. I wouldn't want a gay guy
hitting on me, but the same thing applies to a girl I don't find attractive.
I am NOT addressing anyone in particular in anything I've said, just
stating my own beliefs. If you think being gay is "wrong", or a sin, fine,
believe it. There's not one single person on the planet, not even God
Himself should He exist, that could make me change my opinion on this
matter. Who a person screws shouldn't be important enough to be a sin.
I think Ted Nugent said it best when asked his thoughts on the subject: "I
don't care if you wanna swan-dive naked into a kiddie pool full of peanut
butter... just don't splash on me."
