Anybody know the best way to get rid of an attack of sciatica pain without making a doctor's appointment? I know you gotta bend over backwards (get it? ha?) but I don't want to bend over backwards financially... umm... Ach, Monie, where are you when I need you?

(For those who don't know, 'sciatica' is Greek for 'pain down the back of the leg'. It is a burning, searing, sharp, annoying pain that starts at the top of your hamstring and shoots all the way down to your foot--normally it just bothers the back of the thigh though, at least in my case.)

For those who need a more colorful description: Imagine having the back of your leg being chewed on by a wolverine. Yeah. Now, multiply that times two.

Yeah.

If I don't alleviate this soon, it's going to be a lot of sleepless nights, just like 5 years ago. So please please please if anybody knows what I'm talking about, give me stretching exercises, massage tips, accupressure points, anything? Please? I don't want to be doped up on codeine again, really I don't...

Ow...

Gah..um...I have that problem... I wish I remembered where my stretching exercises thingy was, but if I remember correctly, you should bring your leg up to your chest, laying on your back, with your leg bent so your knee is going toward your chin..if you can kinda picture what I'm saying. And do that really slowly. I've found that pointing and unpointing toes can also help alleviate some of the pain...However, when I found out I had it, I was just told to take the muscle relaxent they gave me and 800mg of ibuprofin, which helped incredibly.

thanks

My physical therapist told me about the stretching things when I first got diagnosed and treated. My bad for not continuing to do them so frequently. Iboprofen helps; so does naproxen sodium...calcium magnesium is considered a muscle relaxant...I wonder if I can get a non-prescription muscle relaxant? Then again, downers make me twitchy.

But thanks for the advice. I've started stretching a lot more and it has helped.
