If a street melts, I won't be shocked
Jul. 18th, 2005 10:49 amThey say that the DC Metro area will be in the nineties and feel like a hundred and two. That is insane. We'll be breathing moisture and heat instead of air. I am glad for the inhalers that I stocked up on for me and Adam.
I have lots of sunscreen. Actually, I have Aveda's Tourmaline Charged Protecting SPF Lotion, Coppertone Endless Summer Ultrasheer, and just about everything from BlueSageNaturals.com. I asked Janine at BSN to help me research the sunscreen powers of Sea Buckthorn Seed Oil. I know it works. She knows it works. But I want to prove it. I haven't gotten burned yet. Actually, I have a lovely light Sicilian bronzing going on. Which is surprising, since the other half of my genetics is Russian-Romanian. My mom never tans, white as milk. But my dad never burns, bronze as... bronze. I guess I'm in between.
Suddenly I want to be in Arizona. It may get to a hundred and two, but it's a dry heat. Actually, I just miss Sedona.
I think we have Florida weather. Feels like a swamp. No offense to any Floridians, of course. (And my in-laws want to move there?)
Hey, California, what's it like over there?

Date: 2005-07-18 03:33 pm (UTC)Because of my time in Arizona, I can't get tan here for anything. I could become a homeless person and still be pale. I've also been told to avoid sunlight because I have blue eyes and light hair, and supposedly that makes you more prone to skin cancer.
I lived in San Francisco, and it was humid there, but cooler than the East Coast. The fog made breathing a challenge, but it usually doesn't hang out all year...just in the spring/fall. Southern California (LA and San Diego) is alot like Arizona, only you have the blessed relief of the ocean when the heat gets too bad.

Date: 2005-07-18 03:48 pm (UTC)You should avoid sunlight, yeah. Well, not totally avoid it -- you need about ten or twenty minutes daily to get the vitamins and such. But fair-skinned and light-eyed people are more prone. Then again, there is my husband, who has blue eyes that occasionally turn gray to clear, but whose skin turns so dark he can be mistaken for Cherokee (actually, he is an official adopted Cherokee, long story). So I wouldn't say he is fair-skinned. But from what I hear anyone with either fair skin or light eyes and especially with both are more susceptible. What kind of sunscreen do you usually use?
CA is cooler? Interesting. I've been to San Fran once, when I was very little. We were near the ocean. Oh, it was bliss. I miss it. Where my parents live, in Sag Harbor, NY (inside the Hamptons) the ocean is a short drive away and you can walk to the bay. The Long Island Sound is so wonderful when it's humid and sticky. Probably not like the San Francisco Bay, though.
Wow, I am chatty today.

Date: 2005-07-18 05:21 pm (UTC)I used to work night shifts when I was active duty in the Air Force and I was actually treated for depression because I wasn't getting enough sunlight. I didn't know that before I took the shift, but the sunlight can actually cause you to be "happy" and if you don't get enough of the vitamins (I forget which ones), it can cause depression. I found that pretty interesting.
I am totally in love with San Francisco. Since the whole city is on the water, the ocean breezes cause it to be a lot cooler, and the elevation helps, too. The surroudning country-side (like Sausalito in Marin County) as beautiful to-die-for weather. It's cool and comfortable year round, with only a slight amount of rain. I really miss San Francisco.

Date: 2005-07-18 07:29 pm (UTC)Actually, I found out that my grandmother had a decent amount of German blood. Her skin was so white you could see every blue of every vein. That must be where Mom gets it. Because the Hungarian blood shouldn't be so pale either. My grandfather was very olive. I remember he always seemed to have a perpetual mild tan.
