This is the fundamental problem with English as a language, its based on other languages. I before E tries to explain to a child how the vowel order is supposed to work but is lost on so many words.

Take the word "their" for instance, its descended from Old Norse theirra. Weigh (weyan) and Neighbor (nEahgebur) are simply mistranslations of spoken words (or modernisations of written words).
